The Beauty Notes
How to start retinol
A gentle introduction to the optional night-time step, with the basics to keep alongside it.
Decide whether it fits your skin
Retinol is a vitamin A derivative used in skincare for uneven-looking tone, texture and fine lines. It is optional, and it is not the same as a prescription retinoid. If your skin is already dry, irritated or very reactive, ask a dermatologist whether it is a suitable choice.
Start slowly
Choose a mild formula, use it at night and follow the product’s directions. The American Academy of Dermatology advises starting gradually rather than jumping straight into daily use. Keep a moisturiser in the routine and pay attention to how your skin feels.
Keep daytime protection in place
Use sun protection during the day, including sunscreen, shade and protective clothing. Follow your sunscreen’s application and reapplication directions.
